Where to Stay in Syracuse

The big choice in Syracuse is Ortigia, the old town island, or a base on the mainland. The deciding factor is often the car: Ortigia has a restricted traffic zone with fixed hours and no free entry for hotel guests.

Ortigia or mainland: how to choose

Ortigia is the historic island at the heart of Syracuse. The cathedral, the Fonte Aretusa spring, the Temple of Apollo and the market are all there. The Neapolis archaeological park and the Paolo Orsi museum are separate sites in the wider city, with their own tickets and hours. So you are choosing between sleeping close to the old town and sleeping where cars are easier to deal with.

We do not list hotels or nightly prices here. This is an independent guide, not a booking site, and it does not speak for any hotel or the city. What we can tell you is how the traffic rules work, because they change what a good base looks like. Check the exact address on a map before you book, since a name like Syracuse centre does not always mean Ortigia.

The traffic zone (ZTL) on Ortigia

The rule that shapes the choice.

ZTL stands for zona a traffico limitato, a restricted traffic zone. Since 1 April 2026, municipal order no. 189 of 30 March sets the active hours: Monday to Saturday from 11:00 to 15:30 and from 17:00 until 02:00 the next day, and Sundays and holidays from 10:00 to 02:00 the next day. The order is tied to the signs being in place, and it can be revoked. Do not assume the winter hours are different, and do not rely on older hour tables you find elsewhere.

A booking is not a permit

A hotel reservation does not by itself allow you to drive in. The city states that a temporary permit for hotel guests covers entry only, not parking.

Connect Pass

A local report of 11 June 2026 says that accredited accommodations handle access for guests and luggage through a digital system called Connect Pass, which replaced earlier systems. You do not apply for it yourself. Ask your host what they will arrange for you.

Parking

The municipal car parks Talete, Molo Sant'Antonio and Von Platen charge €1.50 per hour or €15 per 24 hours, around the clock including holidays. Riva Nazario Sauro and Via Romagnoli use the same rates. On Corso Umberto it is €1 per hour, payable 09:00 to 13:00 and 16:00 to 20:00, but not on holidays. Do not assume these rates apply to every street.

Plan your days around your base

Where the nights and the sights fit together.

If you sleep on Ortigia, most of the old town is a walk from the door. You still need time for the places outside the island. The Neapolis park, the Paolo Orsi museum and the beaches to the south are separate trips, and the beaches are served by SAIS bus line 123 from Corso Umberto. Longer excursions to Vendicari and Marzamemi work best with a car, so think about where it will wait while you are on the island.

One timing detail helps if you have a single day on the island: the cathedral is closed to tourist visits on Sundays, and its hours change with the season, so check them before you go. Walking routes and the main sights are in the Ortigia guide.

Questions to ask before you book

Ask for the exact address, then ask whether the street is inside the ZTL. Ask how a car is meant to arrive and where it is meant to stay. Ask how luggage reaches the door. If you arrive by train or bus, check how far you walk with bags. For the journey from the airport side, see Catania Airport and our guide to getting from Catania to Syracuse.

If you want help choosing between regions for a wider trip, the Sicily guide to where to stay compares bases across the island.

The street market in Ortigia

Where to stay in Syracuse: frequently asked questions

Should I stay on Ortigia?

If you want the old town at your door, yes. If you come by car and want the least trouble with access, a base outside the ZTL is simpler. The choice depends on how you travel.

Can I drive to my hotel on Ortigia?

Not freely. The ZTL is active at fixed hours, and a hotel reservation is not a permit. A temporary guest permit allows entry only, not parking. Ask your host before you arrive.

What are the ZTL hours in 2026?

Since 1 April 2026: Monday to Saturday 11:00 to 15:30 and 17:00 until 02:00 the next day; Sundays and holidays 10:00 to 02:00 the next day. The order depends on the signs and can be revoked, so look at the signs on the day.

How much is parking near Ortigia?

The municipal car parks Talete, Molo Sant'Antonio and Von Platen cost €1.50 per hour or €15 per 24 hours, including holidays.

Are Neapolis and the Orsi museum on Ortigia?

No. They are separate sites in the wider city, with their own tickets and hours. See the guide to the Neapolis archaeological park.
