Ortigia at a glance
Ortigia is the historic core of Syracuse and part of the UNESCO site "Syracuse and the Rocky Necropolis of Pantalica", listed in 2005. The island is small enough to explore on foot. Its main sights stand close together: the cathedral, the Fonte Aretusa spring on the seafront, the Temple of Apollo and the street market.
The other big sights of the city are separate trips. The Neapolis Archaeological Park lies on the mainland, and the beaches, Vendicari and Marzamemi are outside town. This site is an independent guide and is not run by the city, a park authority or a tourism office.

The four main sights
Plan half a day for these, more if you stop for lunch.
The cathedral
Ancient Doric columns of an earlier Greek temple are built into the walls of the church. That is the reason to go inside. A simple visit costs โฌ2 plus a โฌ1 service fee on the operator's ticket page (2026). Combination tickets with extras such as the Secreta Palatii cost between โฌ4 and โฌ8.
Fonte Aretusa
A freshwater spring at the edge of the island, planted with papyrus, on the Largo Aretusa. The outside view is free. An inner walk is a separate paid visit with its own hours, so check at the site before you plan around it.
Temple of Apollo
A Doric stone temple, described by the regional tourism portal as the oldest of its kind in Sicily. In September 2026 the region approved a project for consolidation and restoration, so access around the temple can change.
The market
The street market near the Temple of Apollo sells olives, dried tomatoes and other local produce. It usually runs in the morning from Monday to Saturday until about 2 pm and is closed on Sundays.
The cathedral in detail
The facade is baroque, but the walls behind it are much older. Columns from the Greek temple were left in place when the building became a church, and you can still see them. The statue of Saint Paul at the cathedral is a good landmark when you look for the entrance.
Opening hours at the ticket desk, according to the operator:
- January to April and October to December: 9:00 to 17:30
- May to September: 9:00 to 18:30
- Sundays: closed to tourist visits
There are extra closing days around religious holidays, and visits are not possible during services. Allow a margin and do not plan to arrive at closing time. Guided visits in Italian or English are available on request.

Fonte Aretusa and the seafront
The spring is a short walk from the cathedral. The papyrus plants in the basin are the main attraction, and the view across the harbour is best in the evening. The promenade along the water is a good place for a slow walk after the sights have closed.
Ask at the entrance for the current price and hours of the inner walk. You do not need to go in to see the fountain. A short stop is enough for most visitors.

Arriving by car: the ZTL
The ZTL (zona a traffico limitato) is a restricted traffic zone with camera control. Since 1 April 2026 the municipal order no. 189 sets these times:
- Monday to Saturday: 11:00 to 15:30 and 17:00 to 02:00 the next night
- Sundays and public holidays: 10:00 to 02:00 the next night
The order is tied to the road signs and can be revoked, so treat the times as a guide and follow the signs. A hotel booking is not a permit by itself. A temporary permit for hotel guests allows you to drive in, for example to unload luggage, but not to park. Ask your accommodation how access works before you arrive.
The easiest plan is to park outside the zone and walk. Municipal car parks at Talete, Molo Sant'Antonio and Von Platen charge โฌ1.50 per hour or โฌ15 for 24 hours, day and night including holidays. If you are still choosing a base, read where to stay.
